The Appalling Velmanette Montgomery
By New York Hope | May 21, 2008
This is Democrat Senator Velmanette Montgomery of Brooklyn. Ms. Montgomery is seemingly obsessed with protecting sex predators, and that’s no exaggeration. She believes it’s a crime right up there with jaywalking.
On Monday the Senate passed legislation sponsored by Republican Senator Dean Skelos that would require the Division of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) to post personal information regarding every registered sex predator in New York State. Under current law, New Yorkers are prohibited from accessing any information about so-called Level 1 Sex Offenders. It means if one of these disturbed people live right next door to you, there’s a good chance you’ll never know about it. They’re supposed to be a “low risk” to commit additional sex crimes.
The Skelos bill also requires all sex predators to provide their zip codes. Zip codes enable authorities to send New Yorkers an immediate e-mail informing them a sex predator has moved into their neighborhoods. All it takes is a request to be notified.
This common sense legislation passed 60-1. Well, guess who was the only Senator to vote against it? Velmanette Montgomery.
On May 14 the Senate passed another bill sponsored by Senator Skelos that would create a felony charge for any Level 3 Sex Offender (the “highest risk”) who fails to register or report a change of address. The vote was 60-1. And Senator Montgomery was again the only Senator to vote against it.
Finally, and also on May 14, the Senate passed legislation sponsored by Republican Senator George Maziarz that would make it a misdemeanor if first-time sex offenders apply for a job that provides them with access to children in any way. A second violation is a felony. The Maziarz bill passed 60-1. And, yes, the chairwoman and sole member of the Senate Friends Of Sex Predators Caucus voted against it.
What the hell is this woman’s problem? The precious “rights” of people who commit such heinous crimes that even murderers believe they’re the scum of the earth?
Today I attempted to find out what crime renders someone a Level 1 Sex Offender. That information is not publicly available. Why? Because the law doesn’t automatically brand someone a Level 1, 2 or 3. The court of jurisdiction assigns the offender level. Isn’t that wonderful. We have some of the most criminal-friendly, hug-a-thug judges in the country and they’re making these decisions.
According to DCJS, there are 9,778 Level 1 Sex Offenders living in New York. I highly doubt all of them are 70-year old perverts who briefly opened a rain coat on Main Street.
In Senator Montgomery’s Brooklyn borough there are 636 Level 1 Sex Offenders. But she doesn’t want her northern and central Brooklyn constituents to know that one may be living in an apartment right next to them.
If you’re a Level 1 Sex Offender and decide to apply for a job teaching second graders, Senator Montgomery has no problem with it. Since it’s just dandy that Level 1 Sex Offenders can become teachers, perhaps Ms. Montgomery should track one down on her own and ask him to do some babysitting for her family or friends.
And if you fail to register she also doesn’t believe you should be prosecuted for a felony. It’s called a registry and Senator Montgomery finds no fault with failing to register.
There is no way to describe these three votes by Senator Velmanette Montgomery as anything but disgusting. I wonder how many Democrats in her district will be offended enough to mount a primary challenge. We already know the answer. Zero.
If a Senate Republican cast these three “no” votes there would be a stampede to get on the ballot. The Member would also be denounced publicly by party leaders.
No difference between Senate Republicans and Senate Democrats? Yeah, right.

New York’s Felons Have A Best Friend For Life In The Senate
By New York Hope | May 19, 2008
![]()
This is Democrat Senator Kevin S. Parker of Brooklyn. He’s spent his time in office contemplating the plight of felons. The Parker legislative portfolio includes a bill he introduced that will give New York’s felons the right to vote. He’s the chief sponsor.
So if you’re a murderer, rapist, arsonist or child molester, you can count on Senator Parker to restore your right to vote. Eliot Spitzer has to love this bill given what could happen to him.
Below is the text of the sponsor memo (in the concluding sentence Senator Parker claims it’s the “true duty of patriotism” for felons to have their voting rights restored.)
BILL NUMBER: S.3782
SPONSOR: PARKER
TITLE OF BILL: An act to amend the election law, in relation to qualifications of voters convicted of a felony; and repealing certain provisions of such law relating thereto.
PURPOSE OR GENERAL IDEA OF BILL: To provide re-enfranchisement for voters with felony convictions.
SUMMARY OF SPECIFIC PROVISIONS: Eliminates conviction for a felony as grounds for disqualification from voting.
JUSTIFICATION: Voting is a right, not a privilege, possessed by every American citizen 18 years and older, and protected by the constitution of the United States. The constitution denies voting rights only to non-citizens and individuals convicted of treason, although the tenth amendment allows states to set other reasonable standards of disqualification.
Beginning in the 1870s, felony disqualification was used by states to deny voting rights to newly freed slaves. Along with the Black Codes and extra legal obstacles, this practice denied an entire class of Americans the free exercise of their right to vote. Numerous Supreme Court decisions and the Voting Rights Act of 1965 allowed African-Americans to fully realize their rights to vote. Consequently, black political representation multiplied all across America, from city halls to state legislatures to the United States Congress.
Today, felony disenfranchisement remains a stain on the fabric of American democracy. Felony offenders; serving prison sentences are under the care, custody and control of state and federal corrections officials. In New York state, over 124,000 citizens are currently denied their voting rights. Disenfranchisement falls particularly heavily on minorities; Latinos make up 33% of the disenfranchised while only making up 10.46% of the citizen voting age population. Moreover, due to disenfranchisement policy, it is estimated that over 15,000 veterans in New York state are currently banned from exercising their right to vote. Amnesty International has issued reports criticizing the American prison system. The State Assembly has held hearings on the conditions in state correctional facilities.
Restoration of voting rights to felony offenders will confer a sense of dignity and citizenship to persons we seek to punish for their crime and rehabilitate to rejoin society. Enhancing every American’s right to vote is the true duty of patriotism.
PRIOR LEGISLATIVE HISTORY: 2006, S.1355
FISCAL IMPLICATIONS: None.
EFFECTIVE DATE: This act shall take effect immediately.

The Dr. No New York Democrats
By New York Hope | May 1, 2008
Yesterday, Senate Republicans proposed eliminating New York’s 32-cent state gas tax for the summer months.
“What the heck is more important right now in New York State than to be mobile with your car? This is a life issue,” said Senate Majority Leader Joe Bruno.
It was greeted with opposition. From Democratic Governor David Paterson and Democratic Assembly Speaker Shelly Silver.
The reaction was not a surprise. New York Democrats are committed to doing nothing about the explosive growth in gas prices, or meeting energy demands in our state.
Last December, led by then-Governor Eliot Spitzer and Attorney General Andrew Cuomo, a collection of New York Democrats announced plans to close the Indian Point nuclear power plant on the Hudson River. And last month Governor Paterson traveled to Sunken Meadow State Park to denounce the proposed floating gas plant on the Long Island Sound.
To understand the depth of the New York Democrat party’s bankruptcy when it comes to establishing a workable energy policy, meet New York City Councilman Peter Vallone, Jr.
Yesterday, according to Liz Benjamin at The Daily Politics:
“Mayor Bloomberg and Queens Councilman Peter Vallone Jr. exchanged words this morning - at times loudly - over the New York Power Authority’s decision Tuesday to approve a contract for yet another power generating plant in Astoria, Queens.”
Vallone responded:
“I’m the one who should get hot under the collar, not him. We have five power plants and now we’ve got another dagger aimed at our lungs.”
Dagger aimed at our lungs.
Junior Vallone and his fellow New York Democrats never cease with their emotional nonsense while we’re confronted with a dire need to control the cost of energy for New Yorkers. But it doesn’t end with closing a nuclear power plant, opposing a floating state-of-the-art gas plant or a hysterical reaction to citing a new power plant in Queens. They also oppose drilling for oil in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR).
New York Democrats, in Congress and our State Legislature, are near-universal in their opposition to ANWR drilling. Because it’s “pristine.” That’s the tired word they love to use in their news releases and public comments.
The next New York Democrat who announces opposition to drilling in ANWR because it’s “pristine” should also declare it the destination for a family vacation. If it’s so “pristine,” why not take the children there to experience it?
That won’t happen, of course. The Arctic National Wildlife Refuge is a barren wasteland with caribou and other non-New Yorkers running around on it. Even though it’s above oil that can finally begin to create a national energy policy free from Middle East oil baron thugs, Empire State Democrats ignore the reality.
The facts are undeniable and disturbing: No to slashing the gas tax, no to nuclear power, no to a floating gas plant, and no to drilling for oil. Vote for a Democrat this November if you support it. And forever forfeit your right to complain about paying $4.00 a gallon at the pump.

Reform Darrel Day
By New York Hope | April 30, 2008
“One of Us” was Senator Darrel Aubertine’s campaign slogan as he proceeded to upset Assemblyman Will Barclay in the February special election to fill the seat vacated by Jim Wright. Yesterday, the Watertown Daily Times reported he hired his sister.
The Senator’s Communications Director issued the following statement:
“Earlier today, Senator Aubertine became aware of a situation involving the employment of his sister, Debra A. Wiley, in his Senate office. After reviewing the appropriate policies, Debra has submitted her resignation and our office has accepted it.” [emphasis added]
Became aware? Darrel Aubertine didn’t know his sister was on the payroll? Of course he did, and he dispatched his flack to lie on his behalf.
Senate Minority Leader Malcolm Smith was equally pathetic on Fred Dicker’s show this morning when asked about it. “I think that decision came from his staff,” said Smith.
Blame the staff. That’s usually the colossally stupid move when the boss knows exactly what’s going on. Disgraced Governor Eliot Spitzer tried to pull it off to explain Troopergate.
It’s bad enough that “One of Us” Darrel has failed to tell the truth about hiring his sister, but he also voted for legislation that prohibits the hiring of family members.
“No statewide elected official, state officer or employee, member of the Legislature or legislative employee may participate in any decision to hire, promote, discipline or discharge a relative for any compensated position at, for, or within any state agency, public authority, or the Legislature.”
That’s the language from the bill “One of Us” Darrel voted for on February 14, 2007. It was subsequently signed into law by former Governor Charlie Sheen Eliot Spitzer.
Senator Smith and Senator Aubertine aspire to win the majority this November. Yet they can’t even truthfully explain simple nepotism, and they want New Yorkers to entrust them with property tax relief, health care reform and education funding.
There are decisions legislators make that immediately disgust their constituents. Hiring a family member is one. Senator Aubertine just gave his Republican opponent a major issue to campaign on this fall. Thank you, Darrel.

Queens Democrat Albert Baldeo is running for the State Senate against incumbent Republican Serphin R. Maltese. According to today’s Times:
“Mr. Baldeo’s career has not been without controversy: As a candidate for City Council he was accused of waving a handgun at the wife of a rival Democratic candidate. Charges against him were eventually dismissed.”
We also have Manhattan Democrat Miguel Martinez. Mr. Martinez is Mr. Monopoly Money. The News reports:
“Manhattan City Councilman Miguel Martinez shipped hundreds of thousands of taxpayer dollars to a nonprofit group where his sister sits on the board of directors, a Daily News probe has found. This fiscal year, the Council awarded the Upper Manhattan Council Assisting Neighbors $669,000 in so-called discretionary funds, of which $406,000 was sponsored by Martinez alone, records show.
“Martinez’s sister Maria has been a member of the nonprofit’s board since 2005. She is listed in city records as the group’s secretary. Councilman Martinez’s photo is posted on the group’s Web site under the title ‘Major Sponsor.’ Martinez did not return calls seeking comment.”

The Silence Of New York Democrats
By New York Hope | April 24, 2008
The Cincinnati Bengals New York City Democrats plan to bill taxpayers for their ongoing slush fund scandal. And we hear hardly a peep of outrage from Governor Paterson and other New York Democrats. Councilman Tony Avella was one of the few to denounce it. His hope to be the next Mayor just went down the tubes.
